Apologies, mogzilla, having reread my post I can see, although appropriate, how unhelpful it was to you.

Cotterpin is absolutely right. The problems you are having are fundamental to the bike and it is not worth spending any money trying to improve it. You can put smoother tyres on it and maybe change the saddle but the rest of it is what it is. Your options are to live with it as it is or take my advice and return it as unfit for purpose. If you get your money back then you can either put it towards something better or try and find something second hand that would get you going.

If I can be permitted another jokey remark with a bit of a point to it .... When people come into my shop asking if I have a bike for under £100 I tell them no, and if they want to spend that sort of money on something they can use to get some exercise then would be better to spend it on a decent pair of walking boots.
