Good starter advice - Ladies, hybrid, step through?

Hi

I'm impressed at the advice on here. All looks really solid and helpful.

As with lots of others I'm new to cycling and I'm looking for a step through hybrid for cycling to work (about 3 miles) and occassional recreational cycling at the weekend. I have a young son and will need to fit a child seat on the back and probably a basket on the front.

I don't have a huge budget and was going to buy the Apollo Etienne Hybrid at Halfords (£179.99) as it looked like the right sort of bike for me and the reviews on the Halfords site seemed pretty good. However having Googled it a bit I started to learn a bit more and realise it's a lot more complicated than that so I thought I'd seek some advice.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what brand or specific bike would be a good buy. Budget wise I can go up to about £300.

Thanks
