Hello Mark, Thats a good point you made there. No, bike insurance is not compulsory and very few people bother with it.
If you belong to the CTC you get automatic 3rd party cover when you are on your bike, so they will act on your behalf if you are knocked off or if you are sued. As you say, most household policies will include pedal cycles and on some you can include theft whilst away from home for a bit extra.
Comprehensive cycle cove is available from ETA Services Ltd. They offer new for old replacement, limited period cycle hire following the theft of your bike, a get you home policy, personal accident and third party cover. Their rates are from 33p per week but this will depend on the value of the bike and where you live. Hope that helps.
