I reckon that people like you are best with a hybrid and i also suggest that they need to spend around £400 to get something reasonable so you are off to a good start.

I'm a Ridgeback dealer so if you came into my shop I would be pointing you towards a Ridgeback Meteor but there are many other bikes around which would suit. The key points are to go to a proper bike shop who will make sure the bike is the right size for you and will build it and set it up to suit you. The price is also a key point. With a few exceptions you get what you pay for and the price you pay (not what they say it is worth) generally reflects what you are getting. Finally, simple quality is always better than cheap complicated. In this price bracket, I always advise avoiding suspension and disc brakes and the like.

So go to your local independent bike shop, see what they have and see if you like them enough to do business with them.
