Rather than Halfords, try and find a few local bike shops who specialize only in bicycles. Have a chat with assistants and see how you feel about the shop, their expertise, and their general helpfulness (try and pick a non-busy time). Let them know roughly what your budget is (less 10% or so to leave a margin for a slightly better bike). It may also be worth checking as to how busy their workshop is - one with a good local reputation may be booked up a week or more in advance. Don't buy something on the spot, you need a chance to think about it. Many bike shops only stock a few brands, so it's worth visiting several if possible. It's probably too late in the year now, but some shops offer quite heavy discounts on last years model. It's also worth building up a good relationship with a local bike shop, since they are interested in servicing your bike and/or selling you more accessories, and as a regular customer you may get better or quicker service.
