Re: derailleur v hub gears

If price is really no object you could consider a Rohloff 14-speed hub gear, which has a twist shifter and a very wide range of gears, about the same range as a 24 or 27-speed derailleur setup (alter the size of the chainring to select either the top or the bottom gear that you want). The hub gear is a little heavier than derailleurs, but it really makes gear shifting simple.

To extend the life of the various derailleur sprockets you need to replace the chain regularly. It depends on usage and conditions, but it might be around every 2,000 miles for a 24-speed system and around every 1,000 miles for a 27-speed system. Chains used with hub gears don't need to flex sideways as you change gears, so they have a much longer life.

[For your information, I'm in my mid 60's and enjoy cycling (commuting, social, and touring: did John O'Groats to Lands End last year). I have two bikes: Dawes KaraKum tourer with alloy frame and 27-speed derailleur gears and a Brompton folder with steel frame and 14-speed Rohloff 14-speed hub gear; both weigh about 12.5 Kg including carrier and mudguards, and both have a ridiculously low bottom gear of about 16 gear inches which allows me to go up a 1 in 7 hill without standing on the pedals (assuming you can balance at 3 mph or less).]
