Unless you are into off-road racing, I rather doubt that a cyclocross bicycle is what you are looking for (see description of such a bike at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclo-cross_bicycle).

I've certainly used various hybrid-style bikes over the last 20 years; mainly on-road commuting, some camping/cycling holidays; mild off-road usage (canal towpaths, moderate forest paths, grassy fields), London to Brighton ride (16 times in the last 25 years).

Some other commentators on this site have indicated that Halfords is not the best place to go for bikes, especially as their pricing policy (and supposed discounts) often results in mixed-quality components. A local cycle shop is often a better place to go to.
