One point not mentioned in the excellent advice above:

The general recommendation is to avoid the gear combinations smallest chainring (1) with smallest sprocket (7) and largest chainring (3) with largest sprocket (1).

The reason for this is that in these gear combinations the chain is running at a very diagonal angle which greatly increases chain wear and is also less efficient.

It depends on the sizes of your chainrings and sprockets, but as a first approximation on a typical hybrid bike, in terms of effective gear ratios, changing from one chainring to another is roughly equivalent to changing two or three sprockets.
