I would strongly suggest that you look at a used bike if your budget is limited to £200 or so. None of the established "household named brands" offer bikes as low as that. For £200 you will only find bikes with very cheap headsets, bottom brackets, and hubs, ie, the bits you cannot see.
At this time of the year many of the hire centres are looking to offload some of their older bikes. They will have been regularly services and most companies do not look at models costing less than £400 new, - its not worth their while to buy cheaper. A local hire company to me (Sth Wales) normally sells their used bikes complete with mudguards and pannier rack for about £150.
