From your summary it sounds as if I've managed to make myself clear re gears.

I don't know how far you are intending to commute, but if it is more than a few miles then you may need to proceed gradually, since your muscles won't be used to cycling.

For a week or so just ride a mile or so each day, getting used to the bike and the traffic.

If there are several possible commuting routes, bear in mind that the best route by bicycle may well be different from the best route by car. Local bike shops may have (free) cycling maps of the area; sometimes you have a choice between a slightly longer quiet back-road route and a shorter and busier main-road route - may depend on how comfortable you feel in traffic. At a quiet time (Sunday morning?) try cycling on your proposed commuting route, just to be sure that you know the way without having to worry about too much traffic. Initially just cycle once or twice a week, and over a month or so gradually increase your number of cycling days as you feel up to it. I have found in the past, over a 6-mile commute with no direct main roads, that it may take several months to try out all the possible routes and decide which is best at which time of day; it is certainly possible that your best route in one direction may be different from the best route going the other way.
