Yes, it's full name is Specialized Sirrus Elite.

I recall now that he showed me a short bar, which must have been an extension (if I've got that right?). He said that it would only add about an inch to the overall height of the handlebars - implying it wouldn't change much. Therefore, as you both suggest, it's going to be a change of stem and/or handlebars - shortening and raising the reach, somehow. I will check out the brake lever alignment as well. But I don't think I'll ever get used to it the way it is now. I can't help thinking that the salesman could have found solutions while we discussed it? I live in Kent, I don't suppose your shop is nearby or in the London area?

p.s. the + and - component is at the top of the steerer tube where it meets the stem - when looking down from above.
