The first place to start looking is at your local cycle shop(s); obviously not Halfords in your case.

In order to simplify your choice, you need to decide is what sort of bike you are looking for: hybrid, tourer, road, mountain, straight/dropped handlebars.

What sort of cycling do you envisage: road only, mild off-road (e.g. canal towpaths), serious off-road, mainly flat/some hills/serious hills, short/medium/long distances, etc.

What sort of gears do you want: hub gears are simpler to use but don't have the same range of gears as deraileurs (in the same price range).

Have a think about these various possibilities. I'm quite happy to go into more detail depending on what you wish to consider further.
