I've had mine 24 years, having bought it off a fellow sixth-former at school. I think I paid £350 for it; that was in 1984. Stripped it down and re-sprayed in 1988 and have used it almost daily since. On the fourth set of wheels now. I changed to flat handle bars in 1991 because I was getting neck aches on my 10.5 mile commute each way but have still reached 36.2mph down Notting Hill in London.
Was in the bike shop today where they diagnosed pretty much new everything needed at a much higher spec than the components I put on last time I gave it a major overhaul. They said that even if I should allow almost £600 to have it restored, repainted and kitted out with better components it would cost at least £900-£1,000 to find a new bike of similar quality, so I'm really pleased with it.
