Rother Valley Country Park, South Yorkshire, 3 miles, Novice

Rother Valley Country Park sits midway between Rotherham, Sheffield and Chesterfield on the South Yorkshire / North East Derbyshire border.

Google Map

The park centres around a large water sports lake (man made) with a Nature/Conservation area.

Ample car parking is available.

The main lake[s] is circled by paths. On one side of the lake you can ride on a service road, whilst on the far side of the lake you ride on a compacted hardcore path which varies between 2m and 3m wide.

The circuit is, on the whole, flat and falls just short of 3 miles. If required, you can shorten the circuit by roughly 1/2 mile by missing out the smaller jet skis lake at the far end. 3 circuits of the lake takes about 1 hour at a steady pace.

The park is very popular with families, many of whom go, park up and then either walk, run or ride round.

On busy days, it can sometimes be difficult to negotiate the level of people walking so caution is advised. Definitely make sure you have a bell affixed to your bike and use it to warn walkers that you are approaching. Most are accommodating, although some are not so thoughtful (but this can also be said of many riders who ride without thought for walkers).

Entry to the park on foot or by bike is free, but to enter in a vehicle costs £2.50 (correct at 21/07/08)

I go regularly with my family, most commonly on a Sunday morning (before the rush sets in!), all year round.
