I was browsing the internet for cycle routes close to home and found this website

http://www.hampshirescountryside.co.uk/site/test-valley-tour-cycle-routes

I haven't had an opportunity to try any out yet but do have a fair knowledge of the area and think the description of the routes and the maps are fairly accurate. The site includes a mixture of routes, from easy to very challenging, from on road to off road, approx length of ride in time and miles and also places to stop for food and drink on the way! They all seem to be circular routes, begin at car parks and personally I can't wait to try some out! Once I have I will update this message, hopefully we will have some good weather soon!

Canal Towpaths, Novice (no replies)

For an off-road route which is reasonably level, consider canal towpaths near you. Before cycling on towpaths you should obtain a permit from http://www.britishwaterways.co.uk/ This site also has details about canals, and can search for routes near a postcode or town.

Towpaths may have short slopes near locks and the occasional hump-back bridge, but are otherwise fairly level. There may be gates where you have to feed your bike through a vaguely bike-shaped gap (unsuitable for trailers). The main disadvantage is that you can't in general do circular tours but may have to retrace your route. Surfaces vary, usually sealed or smooth unsealed in and near towns, and slightly more uneven in the country. Narrow (less than 30mm) tyres are not suitable.

Rother Valley Country Park sits midway between Rotherham, Sheffield and Chesterfield on the South Yorkshire / North East Derbyshire border.

Google Map

The park centres around a large water sports lake (man made) with a Nature/Conservation area.

Ample car parking is available.

The main lake[s] is circled by paths. On one side of the lake you can ride on a service road, whilst on the far side of the lake you ride on a compacted hardcore path which varies between 2m and 3m wide.

The circuit is, on the whole, flat and falls just short of 3 miles. If required, you can shorten the circuit by roughly 1/2 mile by missing out the smaller jet skis lake at the far end. 3 circuits of the lake takes about 1 hour at a steady pace.

The park is very popular with families, many of whom go, park up and then either walk, run or ride round.

On busy days, it can sometimes be difficult to negotiate the level of people walking so caution is advised. Definitely make sure you have a bell affixed to your bike and use it to warn walkers that you are approaching. Most are accommodating, although some are not so thoughtful (but this can also be said of many riders who ride without thought for walkers).

Entry to the park on foot or by bike is free, but to enter in a vehicle costs £2.50 (correct at 21/07/08)

I go regularly with my family, most commonly on a Sunday morning (before the rush sets in!), all year round.
