Lancashire Loop Cycle Challenge Sunday September 26th

The Lancashire Loop Cycle Challenge is back for its sixth year and 2010 is going to be the biggest so far!

Take your pick between three routes; a family-friendly 18 miles, 50 miles or 100 miles, each taking you on a tour through the heart of beautiful Lancashire countryside, picturesque villages and stunning valleys on Sunday, September 26th.

There is going to be more than 250 cyclists taking part and we want you to be one of them! Simply register online for £15 (non-refundable) and we ask you to raise a minimum £45 in sponsorship. If you are cycling the 18-mile family route, a family of four (two adults, two children) can register for £30 with a minimum sponsorship of £70. Please contact us to register a family.

Each of the three routes are circular starting and finishing at Cockerham Village Hall, near Lancaster. The 18 miles is flatter and more suited for cyclists with children, while the 100 miles is solely for experienced cyclists ascending 5,000ft! Start times are 8am for 100 miles, 10am for 50 miles and 12pm for 18 miles. Full information about the day will be included in your registration pack or you can CONTACT US for further details.

Please note: you can register on the day, but will need to pay a £18 registration fee.
Who we are:
The Otesha Project UK is a youth-led organisation that's mobilising our generation to create social and environmental change through our everyday lives. I guess you could call us ambitious, or maybe just foolish. In either case, we decided that cycling across the world's second largest country just wasn't enough. You see, we were really inspired by the amazing, creative things the Otesha Project has been doing in Canada for the past five years. We wanted to do something here, too. Starting in the beginning of 2007, we gathered together a group of people from around the UK and took the project trans-Atlantic. Our goals? To tackle big issues like climate change, injustice and poverty in creative ways, starting with our own lives and actions. To build a community of people who are all doing the same thing, to inspire others to take practical environmental actions, and to have a bit of fun at the same time. We want to challenge 'norms' we don't like, speak out against the things we don't agree with, and do it in an exciting, creative way. We want to create something big. A movement, even. Did I mention that we have big aspirations?

I was thinking of signing up to this which is on the 18th July. Its 59 miles. I just have a few questions:

What sort of training do I need to do for this?

I am a moderate cyclist - ie cycle on weekends when I can and also started at the gym I do 5 - 10 miles approx 3 times a week.

Has anyone else done this? Any tips?

Ride through Ethiopia for Maternity Worldwide RESCHEDULED for February!! (no replies)

Maternity Worldwide is a charity based in Brighton in the UK that supports projects in the developing world, particularly in Ethiopia, aimed at saving lives in childbirth. Since our inception we have funded a birthing clinic in Gimbie, a small town in Ethiopia, and for the last four years one of our most successful sources of funds has been a sponsored bike ride that we organise through Ethiopia to Gimbie and this clinic.

Unfortunately this year we have had to reschedule our Ethiopia bike ride, previously advertised here on Why Cycle. The new dates for the ride are now from Friday the 26th February to Thursday 11th March. The trip involves 6 days of cycling, at a measured pace that we've found suitable for people anywhere from aged 18 to aged 60! The trip is really an amazing experience, and one that will stick with you for the rest of your life. Around the cycling we also have a couple of days in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia where we start, a day to see our clinic where the money goes, and further days in the beautiful countryside of Ethiopia.

Now that the bike ride's been rescheduled, there's still more time to sign up. and we'd love to get more people on board. We ask for participants to raise £1500 which sounds intimidating but we'll help you with ideas and support to raise that money, and this sponsorship money includes your aeroplane fees and food and accommodation for the two weeks.

Maternity Worldwide is a small but very succesful charity based in Brighton, that works in Africa to combat maternal health problems. We fund a birth clinic in Gimbi, Ethiopia, and also provide money for various social and medical programmes throughout the rest of Ethiopia.

For the last 4 years we have raised money through 2 annual bike rides, one in Ethiopia, between Addis Ababa and Gimbi, and one in Ireland between Belfast and Sligo. We're now looking to attract another group of keen individuals for this year's Ethiopia event, from Friday the 30th October to Friday 13th November. This is a trip of a life time, you will be able to make a real difference to the lives of women in Africa, whilst at the same time having an incredibly fulfilling and enjoyable personal experience. You will also be able to visit our project in Gimbie and see where the money you raise goes.
Dear Cycling fans

We need your help in recruiting cyclists for The Wheely Big Relay! It's the first time we've taken on an event like this and we're very keen to make it a success in this, our 30th anniversary year.

The event is a sponsored cycle ride from Edinburgh to London as part of Action for Brain Injury Week 2009. However, unlike other national cycle rides, you don't have to agree to do the whole thing. Instead, you can do a one-day leg. It'll still be a challenge, but a fun and manageable one.

We've also reduced our minimum sponsorship levels. If you sign up before 16 March, you now only have to agree to raise £200 - that's a reduction of £100! The added bonus is that any money raised above that total will go to your chosen group or branch.

If you're not able to take part, please could we ask you to forward the information to any friends, family or colleagues who may be up for a 'wheely' big challenge for a great cause.

More information and a downloadable application form can be found on the Headway UK website (www.headway.org.uk).

Many thanks,

Fancy a wheely big challenge? Then why not take part in The Wheely Big Relay! It is a sponsored bike ride from Edinburgh to London on behalf of Headway – the brain injury association.

The relay will pass through several towns and cities, visiting many Headway groups along the way where the cyclists will be given a warm welcome and a chance to see how their efforts will make a difference in people's lives.

The great thing about The Wheely Big Relay is that you don’t have to sign up to do the whole ride. Instead, you can choose to complete a one-day leg near your home town and still make a big difference to the lives of brain injury survivors across the UK.

We need your help to get as many cyclists as possible to join in and make this event a success. Perhaps you could get a team together from your office? The relay is split into day-long legs, so your team needn’t be out of the office for more than a day and it could be an excellent bonding exercise.

Lancashire Loop Cycle Challenge - 26, 54 or 100 miles (no replies)

The MedEquip4Kids Lancashire Loop Cycle Challenge is back for the fourth year and going to be bigger and better than ever! Take your pick between three different routes - 24 miles, 54 miles or 100 miles - and cycle through beautiful Lancashire countryside. With all three routes starting and finishing in the picturesque village of Cockerham (near Lancaster), you will cycle through the Lune Valley, across the Bowland Fells and back through the Ribble Valley. Sections of this event (especially the 100 miles) are challenging but you will be rewarded with the breathtaking scenery and long downhill sections. The Lancashire Loop will be fully marshalled with refreshment stops en route. The shorter 26-mile route is flatter and therefore suitable for families.
