Its not unusual for a Ridgeback to be a size down from what one might expect for a given individual, the main reason being the suspension seat pin. What you need to be sure of is that the smaller size will not compromise the overall ride position. If for example, somebody has short legs and longer upper body then maybe the smaller frame might not be appropriate and in that case I recommend a larger frame with a plain rather than suspension seat pin.
The best person to judge is the guy who saw you on the bike and if he seemed to know his stuff then go with his call.
