Not sound advice Damion.

The Campag/Shimano argument will continue as long as both companies exist, each camp having its band of adherents. The reality is that they both work equally well and the open minded rider would get pleasure from riding with either. Shimano gear changes tend to be smoother than Campag which is a bit notchy. Shimano STI shifters can seize up if left unused - the grease tends to pick up water and thickens. Irrigation with GT85 normally effects a cure.

The big difference between the two is spares and component supply. As somebody who mends bikes for a living I can assure you that sourcing Campag components can be a complete nightmare. There are two importers, neither of whom are particularly easy to deal with and when something is out of stock, then its anybody's guess as to when it might be available. Shimano kit on the other hand is available from a plethora of sources and with the odd exception, I have always been able to find particular parts parts somewhere. So shimano kit is much easier to live with and when people ask my advice it is for that reason I suggest that if all other factors are equal, then the shimano option is to be preferred.
