Removal of auto gears?

Looking for some help removing a Shimano NEXUS AUTO D automatic 3 speed gear change system from a new (second-hand) bike I'm picking up tomorrow. I'm an experienced cyclist and hate the idea of not being in control of when my gears change, but I bought this bike because the price was right, which is an unusual occurrence in and around Cambridge.

So what I need to know is: are these things relatively easy to remove? If so, what tools will I need to take to remove the Nexus? And is there any second-hand retail value in auto gear changers? I can't see the point myself, but if others will pay I'd like to sell it on.

I'd really appreciate some help today, I don't want to damage the bike by trying to remove the Nexus with the wrong tools.
