Whilst I accept that some people do use hybrids to do LEJOG, I if you are looking to buy a new bike why go for something which is designed for on-off road when you are travelling almost 1000 miles on road? Your budget will only buy a low to middle range hybrid bike anyway.
Personally I would go for a good second-hand tourer on the basis of - its designed for the job, you get three hand positions which give relief to your back/neck, a steel frame absorbs more vibration than alloy (less tiring).
