derailleur v hub gears

I am an oldie ( 70s) but I still like my cycling.
At the moment I have Cambridge mens town/comfort/touring bike.
this weighs in at 27.5 lbs I am old fashioned with weights and measures
but that equates to about 12.5 Kg.
I want a lighter bike less carrier, and mudguards to use in dry conditions
I am not afraid of getting a little wet as I can always shower after my ride.
Now I come to the crux of this question at the moment I have 18 gears or speeds.
I am quite happy with this on a heavy bike but I would prefer to get to eight speeds
hub gears,or slightly more on drealleurs on a bike new purchase.
I have seen bikes with 8 speed hubs and they are just what I need apart from the
added weight.they are quoted as needing less servicing as the gears are enclosed and
water and mud is not supposed to get to them and affect the workings.
I have also read some letters on other sites that state that they do not last for long.
Derailleurs Ah i did most of my cycling in the era of Stumey Archer 4 speed hubs I traveled
many a mile on these and suffered very little trouble ( the good old days).
I am fairly new to derailleurs and have just on this second bike with them on, have
managed at last how to adjust them correctly.
My cycling with my new bike when I get it will consists of rides mainly of 20 to thirty miles
duration in very hilly terrain so I need a good bottom gear.
If I get a deraileur what is the best combination to get me ten or twelve gears with a wide spread
I feel that one of the drawbacks of a derailleur setup is tht so many gears overlap so that instead
of having 21 gears on a 3x9 bike you only truly have about 15 or 16.
Answers anticipated thanking beforehand.
