Saddle soreness can often be due to rubbing sores.... your clothing sticks to the bike and when you move around in the saddle your skin rubs on your clothes. Padded cycling shorts are worn as underwear and the pad, as well as wicking away sweat, sticks to you and the lycra slides around on the saddle. No skin rubbing and no sores. If someone come into my shop asking for a new saddle because they are getting sore then I recommend cycling shorts if the saddle on their bike is half decent and set up properly. Usually provides a cure.

By the way, if you don't like the look of lycra, wear something on top of it!
