I understand what you're saying with the 26" being effectively lower geared, it just takes a bit of getting my head round that although the larger 700c wheel feels harder to turn, i am actually going further for each revolution of the crank...

Funny what you said about customers returning mountain bikes because they're not fast enough, i purchased one from Halfords a while back with road biased tyres, but didn't think to check the size of the chain rings on the front, of course as i cycled down the road after picking the bike up i very quickly ran out of gears! I estimated a top speed of about 10 mph, not really what i was looking for... Luckily i managed to return it with a full refund. They did offer to install larger rings but i thought as the bike wasn't really designed for that, this wouldn't be the best option so declined...
